Organising Your Tasks

There are many different projects you must work on, and the deadlines are running. Your manager approaches you and gives you even more work, so you have to prioritise your tasks.

How do you organise your tasks, including the new ones your manager just gave you?

You try to work on every different task simultaneously. You are even working overtime to make sure you finish in time.

You focus on the tasks that are mentioned to be “urgent” and completely ignore the rest of them.

You communicate with your manager and together you try to find a working plan that is tailored to both the company’s and your needs and preferences.

Asking for Help

There is this very difficult project you are currently working on, and you are stuck at a certain point, and you do not know how to make any progress. One of your colleagues sees you being stressed about that and approaches you to find out what is going on.

Hey! What is going on, is everything okay? You look really stressed these days; does it have to do with work?

Hello, no everything’s fine! I am in total control of everything.

Yes, I have some trouble with this project, it’s really bothering me this last week. I think I can manage, though. Thank you for asking.

Yes actually, I am really stuck at this part, and I do not know how to move on. I don’t know how available you are, but do you maybe have any idea about how I can solve this issue, if you don’t mind?

Dealing with Changes

It is Friday morning, and your boss is approaching you and announces that starting next week, your timetable at work will have to change. You are surprised hearing this news, as you had planned your working schedule for next week.

I must announce you that from Monday you will have to be here at 11am. Of course, that means that you will be finishing work at 7pm. Do you mind these changes?

It is unacceptable! I have already planned everything for next week. I cannot agree with this.

Yes sure, I can make it work. I will focus today on rescheduling all the meetings I had booked for next week.

Thank you for the notice! However, there are some meetings that it would be difficult to reschedule. Would you mind looking together at the working schedule so we can figure out something more convenient?

Openness to Feedback

You just present your work’s progress to your team. One of your colleagues is not convinced that this is the right method of working and proposes some big changes that will take you a lot of time and will make you miss the deadline. You are not convinced that these changes are necessary.

I am sorry, but I do not know how this model will work in real life. I think you should start over and find a different strategy to develop your material. Would that be possible?

No, I do not have enough time, and I am sure my approach works just fine.

I am sorry but could you present me the reasons why it would not work? I am really interested to hear your opinion.

Due to time restraints, unfortunately it would be impossible to work from the start. However, we can talk more about the specific parts that, in your opinion, are not correct, and maybe try to work together to give a more effective solution?

Team Building Work Activities

Your colleagues think that it would be a great idea to organise some activities together after work to assist with team building. Even though you find it a great idea, you are not sure if the proposed activity is appropriate to you, as it would put you in a stressful situation.

Next Friday after work we are thinking of going all together to play beach volleyball at a court nearby. Would you be down to join us?

No, even though I’m free on Friday, unfortunately I do not know how to play volleyball, so I don’t want to ruin your fun.

Yes, sure. I will join you!

That’s an interesting idea. However, I do not really like beach volleyball, but I would like to participate. Would it be a problem if I join you, but maybe avoid playing?

Handling Miscommunication

Your manager assigned you to a new task, however he forgot to include the specific instructions and tools you need in order to correctly complete it. You meet the manager in the office, and it is your chance to ask him about it.

How is the new task going?

It is going great; I have already started working on it.

I must solve some issues before starting, but I will be able to do it by myself.

I am not sure about the implementation steps of the projects. Would you mind giving me some more information about it?
